The Commerce

The Demand

To fulfill the growth of the demand, the collectors are no longer able to supply the necessary raw material. The market is now too specialized, generating a net of small collectors from all the southern beaches. They are frequently visited by resellers - people that buy and resell the shells to the artisans. These people turned this activity into a regular business, keeping the production active.

The Shells’ Roads

After leaving the hands of the artisans, the shellcrafts take unknown routes, being sold in all of the Brazilian states, many times shown as a product of the region wherever they are exhibited. The traditional “baianinha” and several other objects being sold in the most sacred points of national tourism are, in their majority, made in Piúma.
