Shell Seekers

Changing Culture

In the past, the shell catching and necklace-making were exclusive female tasks.

Many catchers say that they learned the craft when still a child, with the older women in their families.Using shovels, they dig in the place where the mollusk lies. Because the crustaceans come in the night tide, they make gasoline-soaked bamboo lanterns to attract them to the light.

Today, men are also dedicated to all the phases of the art craft in this enchanted world of shells.
